Tescan Group has strengthened its position in advanced research and high-tech manufacturing with the acquisition of FemtoInnovations, a Connecticut-based developer of ultrafast laser technologies. The deal will also see the creation of a dedicated Laser Technology Business Unit, headquartered at the University of Connecticut (UConn) Tech Park.
The new division will broaden Tescan’s portfolio in semiconductor, biomedical device manufacturing, and advanced research markets by pairing its imaging and analysis platforms with FemtoInnovations’ disruptive laser systems.
Jean-Charles Chen, Chief Executive Officer of Tescan Group, said the acquisition reflects the company’s ambition to deliver faster, end-to-end workflows for its customers. “By integrating ultrafast laser micromachining with our established imaging and analysis platforms, we are enabling clients to move more rapidly from problem to insight, whether in failure analysis, R&D, or advanced manufacturing,” he said.
Tescan is expected to showcase the expanded portfolio at the International Symposium for Testing and Failure Analysis (ISTFA) in Pasadena this November.
For FemtoInnovations, founded on the pursuit of disruptive laser processing solutions, the partnership provides a platform for scaling its innovations globally. Co-founder Sina Shahbazmohamadi said combining the company’s ultrafast laser expertise with Tescan’s technologies would “create a new dimension of integrated workflows and accelerate discovery across industries.”
The Laser Technology unit will begin operations in 2026 and will work in synergy with Tescan’s existing Electron Microscopy and Micro-CT businesses. A new FLAME Center (FemtoInnovations Laser Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering) is also being established at UConn’s Innovation Partnership Building to fast-track research, applications, and workflow development.
Bruno Janssens, Chief Strategy Officer at Tescan, who oversaw the evaluation of the deal, noted that FemtoInnovations’ team, technology maturity, and customer-first approach made the company a natural fit. “Their ability to deliver laser processing systems ready for real-world use sets them apart. This is the kind of partnership that raises the standard for our industry,” he said.
UConn Tech Park leaders hailed the development as a model for industry-academic collaboration. Dr. Emmanouil Anagnostou, the park’s executive director, said the partnership would spur talent development and drive industrial applications in semiconductors and biomedical devices.
