Nigeria Immigration Service Launches High-Capacity Passport Centre

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has unveiled a new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at its Abuja headquarters, marking a major leap in passport production efficiency. The facility can now process up to 5,000 passports daily—far surpassing the previous output of 250–300 across multiple centres.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the initiative as a transformative milestone during his inspection of the centre. “For the first time in over six decades, Nigeria now operates a single, centralised passport production hub,” he said, emphasizing its readiness and alignment with global standards.

The centre, developed in partnership with IRISMAT Technologies Limited, features advanced automation capable of producing 1,000 passports per hour. Tunji-Ojo noted that the system will drastically reduce delays, aiming to deliver passports within one week—down from the previously promised two-week timeline.

He also revealed that the backlog of over 204,000 pending applications inherited by the current administration has been cleared. “This is about restoring trust and proving that government services can be efficient and reliable,” he added.

The reform supports President Bola Tinubu’s broader agenda to modernize public institutions and improve service delivery for Nigerians both locally and abroad.
