United States President Donald Trump has set a Sunday deadline for Hamas to accept his newly unveiled 20-point ceasefire plan for Gaza, warning that rejection will bring unprecedented consequences.Trump announced the ultimatum in a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, calling Hamas a “ruthless and violent threat” and describing the proposal as the group’s “last chance” to negotiate.
He gave Hamas until 6pm Eastern Time (22:00 GMT) on Sunday to comply, warning that failure would trigger a new wave of devastating military action. The plan, revealed earlier this week during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, promises to “redevelop” Gaza into a “deradicalised terror-free zone.” It explicitly bars Hamas from any role in governance while making limited demands of Israel, whose campaign in the territory has killed more than 66,000 Palestinians, according to UN estimates.Key provisions include the release of Israeli captives by Hamas in exchange for over 1,400 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, increased humanitarian aid to ease Gaza’s worsening famine, and the creation of a temporary “Board of Peace” chaired by Trump alongside other world leaders such as former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The plan also envisions an “International Stabilisation Force” to work with Palestinian police and border authorities.Hamas has confirmed it is studying the proposal and will issue a response “soon.” However, criticism of the plan has mounted. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the published version diverges significantly from earlier drafts presented to Arab and Muslim leaders at the UN General Assembly in September. Meanwhile, a group of 28 UN experts warned that the proposal risks entrenching foreign control over Gaza, describing it as “reminiscent of colonial practices” and incompatible with Palestinian self-determination.
Despite the backlash, Trump has doubled down on his position, pledging full American support for Israel if Hamas rejects the deal. “We will have peace in the Middle East one way or the other,” he declared, insisting that his plan remains the only path to stability after nearly two years of conflict.
