Standards Push Gains Grounds in U.S Additive Manufacturing Sector

America Makes and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have released the September 2025 Gaps Progress Report, underscoring strides made toward strengthening standards for the fast-growing field of additive manufacturing (AM).

The report reviews six months of coordinated work by standards developing organizations (SDOs), federal agencies, researchers, and industry stakeholders to close critical gaps identified in the Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing, Version 3.0. These gaps range from material quality and process control to testing, certification, and data management—areas seen as essential to advancing reliability and broader adoption of 3D printing technologies.

The update tracks progress on 28 priority items, while also flagging areas that need further research or revisions. It is presented as a “living document,” meant to evolve as standards are developed and new challenges emerge, ensuring that industry and regulators can move in step with rapid AM innovation.

First published in July 2023, the Version 3.0 roadmap mapped out 141 gaps in the AM lifecycle, classifying 54 as high priority. In nearly two-thirds of those cases, additional pre-standardization research was called for—reflecting the complexity of ensuring safety, performance, and global competitiveness in the sector.

The AMSC, which brings together voices from government, academia, industry, and national laboratories, coordinates these efforts to accelerate consensus-driven standards that can foster confidence in additive manufacturing. Nearly 300 experts from over 150 organizations contributed to the roadmap, demonstrating the broad push to transform 3D printing from a promising technology into a fully standardized, industrial-strength solution.
